Gina K Tags & Correcting Ink Colors Tutorial

Hi Friends... I'm back today with more Christmas Tags from the Gina K Designs Winter Cheer Stamp TV Kit.  If you missed my post last week, you can check it out HERE.  

I'll start with my first quick and easy tag that involved zero coloring.  I added a bit of the pattern paper from the kit and the cut files that I downloaded for the stamp set {details in my post from last week}.  Super easy little tag.

For my next tag, I colored this fun little owl with my Spectrum Noir Markers and made him the star of my sweet little tag.  Here's how I colored him...

Step 1:  I prepared my tag with the pattern paper background and sentiment & then got to work with deciding which colors I wanted to use for my owl.  I pulled out my Spectrum Noir Color Chart to match up the colors.

TIP: The chart is available as a free download on the Spectrum Noir website - (click HERE).  You can down download either a blank chart or one that is colored in already.  Please note that printed colors may vary from the actual marker colors, which is why I recommend you print a blank chart and fill it in with the markers you have.

Step 2: I selected my initial colors and listed each color on the card with the Spectrum Noir color #.

TIP: These handy little color cards are great to keep if you want to recreate your card another time.  Just write down the name of your project & put them with your stamp set.

Step 3: Begin coloring the owl's face with TN3 one the outer edges.

Step 4: Add TN2 to fill in the remainder of the face.  Lightly color over the TN3 to blend. 

Step 5: Using TN7, color the top of the owl's head.

Step 6: Next add TN6 on the rest of the owl's head and lightly color over the TN7 to blend.

TIP: Remember to work in small areas so the ink stays wet for better blending.

Step 7: Once again, using TN7 & TN6, color the owl's body.

oops... I made a mistake and colored outside the lines with my TN6 marker.

TIP:  It's easy to fix coloring errors by dabbing your Blender pen on the spot.

TIP: After applying the Blender Pen, let it dry for a few minutes and the mistake should disappear. When correcting dark colors and reds, you may need to do use the Blender a few more times.

Step 8: After coloring the hearts red with DR5, the beak with GB6, and feet with GBR4, I continued with the wing using TN3 on the left side of the wing.

Step 9: I added TN2 to the rest of the wing and blended by lightly going over the TN3.

Step 10: I pulled marker JG7 for the owl's scarf which matched the background paper perfectly & colored the areas that I wanted to appear darkest.

Step 11: To add a lighter color for shading, I added CG3 to the rest of the scarf.  I was NOT happy with the result... so now it's time to get creative & fix the mistake!

Step 12: To fix my glaring lack of blending on the scarf, I added JG1 to the entire scarf.  It covered up the blending issue; however, it still didn't show any shading.

Step 13: So I lightly added some LG2 to just a few areas of the scarf (on the far right bottom & on the tails).

TIP: By using a lighter color, it pulled some of the darker color off the image.  

Here is my final colored image along with my list of colors used.
As you can see, I also included the color I didn't like, for future reference.

I hope you found my coloring tips helpful.  Don't worry if you don't have the same Spectrum Noir colors I used.  Just look through your stash and find something similar.
